Grids Uitleg: Abstract Reasoning Module Guide
Learn what the Grids module is, how it works, and what to expect when solving 3-by-3 pattern-based abstract reasoning items.
What the Grids module covers
The Grids module is part of abstract reasoning assessment practice. It uses a 3-by-3 matrix of shapes to test how well you can spot and apply a visual pattern.
Each item shows a set of figures with one missing square. Your task is to study the relationships across the grid and identify the shape that completes the pattern.

How to approach each matrix
A practical way to work through these items is to check the rows and columns in a fixed order. Look for changes in shape, position, rotation, count, or combination rules, then compare how those changes move through the grid.
- Scan the full matrix before choosing an answer.
- Check for one clear rule across rows, columns, or both.
- Use elimination when more than one option seems possible.
The goal is not to guess the missing figure by appearance alone. It is to identify the pattern that repeats or develops in a logical way and then match the answer to that rule.
What to prepare before you start
Treat the module like a short checklist exercise. A steady method is more useful than rushing through the visual details.
Before starting practice, make sure you are comfortable with basic shape changes and simple sequence logic. That helps you move through the matrix more efficiently.
If you use the free practice test, focus on consistency. Review any items you miss and note which type of pattern took the longest to identify.
