What is an aptitude test?

An aptitude test measures how well you reason and process information: with numbers, language and abstract shapes. Employers use it in selection to predict how quickly you will pick up a role. You will meet it from providers like LTP, GITP, SHL, Cubiks and Assessio, often as part of an assessment.

Every test consists of a few fixed sections. If you know the question types in advance, you lose no time in the test working out what the task is.

What is a cognitive ability test?

A cognitive ability test is an aptitude test that measures how well you reason and process information. Employers use it to select candidates, often as part of an assessment.

Examples of cognitive ability tests are number sequences, figure sequences, matrices, analogies, syllogisms and numerical reasoning: the sections on this page. It is not a medical memory test of the kind a doctor gives.

What is the difference between an aptitude test and an assessment?
An assessment is the whole selection process, which can include a personality questionnaire, role play and interview. The aptitude test is the part that measures your reasoning.
