What is an exclusion test?
In an exclusion question you get a row of words, numbers or shapes. All items share a property, except one. You pick that one. Exclusion measures how quickly you recognise categories and rules, and it appears in many Dutch aptitude tests.
There are often two possible differences. The right answer is the item that differs on the most specific, unambiguous property.
Also called odd one out or 'which does not belong'.
How to solve an exclusion question
- Name what the first two items have in common and test that on the rest.
- Numbers: check odd/even, squares, primes and divisibility.
- Words: check category (vegetable/fruit), function, word class and spelling.
- Shapes: count corners, lines and axes of symmetry.
