What is a maths test in an assessment?
In the maths section of an assessment you solve sums with no or limited tools: percentages, fractions, decimals, ratios and speed-distance-time. The sums are no harder than secondary school level, but the time pressure is high.
You make the difference with fixed shortcuts and lots of repetition, so you never have to think about the method.
Also called arithmetic test, numeracy test or math skills.
How to calculate faster
- Percentages: work via 10% and 5%. 15% of 240 = 24 + 12 = 36.
- Fractions: make the denominators equal before adding or subtracting.
- Dividing by a decimal: multiply both numbers by 10 or 100 until the divisor is whole.
- Speed = distance ÷ time. Always convert minutes to hours (30 min = 0.5 h).
