What is verbal reasoning?
Verbal reasoning is logical thinking with language: seeing how words relate and drawing conclusions from statements. It is close to what psychologists call verbal intelligence. The questions differ from one test provider to the next.
Two question types are common in Dutch aptitude tests: analogies (the relationship between two word pairs) and syllogisms (does a conclusion follow from two statements?). Those two are what you practise here. Many tests, especially in the UK, use reading passages instead: you read a short text and judge whether a statement is true, false or cannot say. That question type is not in this test.
How to approach verbal reasoning
- Analogies: turn the first word pair into a precise sentence ('a bird lives in a nest') and put the second word in the same sentence.
- Syllogisms: only use the two statements, not what you know yourself.
- For a syllogism, draw the groups as circles. A conclusion only follows if it holds in every possible drawing.
- You get 30 seconds per question and cannot go back to a previous one. If you are stuck, pick the best answer and move on.
